Meet Our Executive Team
George (Ed)ward Wilson, PHD
Ed co-founded Outdoor Underwriters, LLC in 2008. As Vice President, he manages the operations for all aspects of their forestry-related insurance products. OUI’s product lines include hunting lease liability, timberland liability, standing timber insurance, consulting foresters, prescribed burning and other related forestry products. This venture is backed by Ed’s 20 years of experience with placing business into the Lloyd’s insurance market and his management of underwriting contracts for forestry-related business. During this time, Ed expanded the hunting liability program nationwide from 1 to 30 million acres and developed underwriting contracts for several liability products including prescribed burning, forestry consultants errors and omissions and timberland.
In addition to his 20 years of employment in the insurance industry, Ed has 12 years of additional employment with Virginia Tech, West Virginia University and Weyerhaeuser where he was actively involved in research projects for timber management and operations research, timber harvesting, and workers compensation for logging contractors.
He has been a featured speaker at numerous forestry associations and landowner groups where presentations covered timber harvesting, landowner liability, workers compensation, and forestry operations. He also has authored numerous publications on topics as diverse as cable logging in the Appalachian Mountains, biomass energy, workers compensation for logging contractors, safety management and liability associated with landowners and recreational activities.
Ed is a certified forester and a member of the Society of American Foresters. Ed has earned the following degrees: a B.S. in Forest Management from West Virginia University; a M.S in Forestry Economics from West Virginia University; and a Ph.D. in Industrial Forestry Operations from Virginia Tech.
Thomas (Tom) Skaggs
Tom Skaggs serves as the Director of Underwriting assisting with business development and risk management for all of Outdoor Underwriters’ specialty markets. Tom works with our clients and insurance markets to identify emerging exposures that can be addressed during the application process. Utilizing claims data he has created a loss analysis model to identify risk related to hunting club and landowner demographics. Furthermore his model is applied to OUI’s equipment and standing timber insurance programs. It is designed to recognize inherent risk based on certain underwriting criteria while taking into account the possibility of moral hazards.
Prior to his appointment with Outdoor Underwriters, Tom worked with Ed Wilson for a period of 15 years when he departed in July 2004 to establish a risk management and loss control company, Material Risk Assessment (MRA). Tom served for 5 years as the Director of Loss Control for MRA, a division of Appalachian Underwriters whose writings were in excess of half a billion dollars annually.
Tom graduated from the University of Montana’s School of Forestry with concentration in Forestry and Business Management. He has worked as a forester with both the government and private sectors. Tom has over 25 years of insurance experience as it relates to the to the forest products industry and brings a unique perspective to our clients, addressing all of their potential exposures to loss. He works extensively with our Lloyd’s of London markets developing safety programs and risk management strategies.
Tom has been a featured speaker at universities, state forestry and wildlife organizations, as well as landowner groups and hunting club workshops. His presentations cover Landowner Liability, Hunting Lease Liability, Risk Management and Timber Harvesting Safety. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the following organizations: Forest Resource Association, South Carolina Wildlife Federation and Tennessee Forestry Association.
Jack Tribble serves as Vice President of the Outdoor Underwriters Institutional Timber Program. Jack graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Risk Management & Insurance. Jack began his insurance career in 1974 with the international insurance brokerage firm of Johnson & Higgins. After serving in various brokerage and management roles in the Atlanta office of J&H, Jack was transferred to Birmingham where he served as Branch Manager and Principal of the firm. He remained in that role after the 1997 acquisition of J&H by Marsh & McLennan and became a Managing Director of Marsh. In 2003, Jack became the Southeastern Regional Compliance Officer overseeing regulatory & compliance activities of 23 Marsh offices and remained with Marsh until 2007.
For the last 7 years, Jack has been involved in the development of the institutional timber industry insurance program at Forest Security Resources, LLC. His intent of bringing this product to the market was successfully rolled out in 2011; currently the program has over 6 million acres of institutional timber insured in the U.S. and five foreign countries. He focuses on large timber portfolio managers and owners.
Jack and his wife Kathy reside in Birmingham, AL and have two grown children. Jack works in our Outdoor Underwriters Alabama office.
